Fullani long silver earings
Fulani women show of their wealth through their jewellery. Many wealthy women are financially independent of men; they inherit gold jewellery, and every woman has her own herd. Jenné goldsmiths learned their filigree technique from Moroccan Jewish goldsmiths who settled in Walata in southern Mauritania. Gold found extensively in northern Senegal at the time of old Ghana Empire, has been handed down over the generations, and is found in the same area today, although in much smaller quantities.
